Our Projects

Since 2011, Gender Empowerment and Development (GeED) has implemented a series of innovative projects with national and international partners to address Gender-Based Violence (GBV), strengthen safe learning environments, and empower students, teachers, and communities. Over the years, our work has expanded from direct prevention in schools to include psychosocial support, community engagement, policy advocacy, sexuality education, and drug abuse prevention.

Empowering Schools and Communities to Foster Safe Environments (Ongoing)

Partner: Bread for the World (BftW)
Duration: Feb 2025 – Jan 2028
Coverage: 70 schools in the Centre (40), Littoral (20), and West (10) regions
Focus: A comprehensive approach integrating:
• Sexuality Education (CSE): Helping students understand their bodies, rights, and relationships
• Drug Abuse Prevention: Addressing drug possession and use among students through awareness, referral, and prevention systems
• School-Related GBV (SRGBV): Supporting schools to adopt policies that prevent and protect against violence
• Community Engagement: Strengthening CAGs and parent involvement to build resilience and accountability
• Peer Education: Training student leaders to spread positive values and support their peers

Intensifying GBV Awareness in Nachtigal Hydroelectric Project Communities (Ongoing)

Partner: Nachtigal Hydro Power Company (NHPC)
Duration: 2020 – 2025
Coverage: Primary and secondary schools in Obala, Batchenga, Ntui, and Mbandjock
Focus:
• Intensifying awareness creation on GBV in schools and surrounding communities
• Reaching children, teachers, parents, and local leaders in communities impacted by the Nachtigal-Amont Hydroelectric Development Project
• Ensuring safe school environments in rapidly changing project-affected areas

Strengthening Safe School Communities through GBV Prevention

Partner: Bread for the World (BftW)
Duration: Feb 2022 – Jan 2025
Coverage: 70 schools in the Centre (40), Littoral (20), and West (10) regions
Focus:
• Working with Community Action Groups (CAGs) to support school safety
• Training teachers and school leaders on gender mainstreaming and psychosocial support
• Raising student awareness on rights, responsibilities, and reporting of SRGBV

Building Safer and More Gender-Responsive Schools

Partner: Bread for the World (BftW)
Duration: Feb 2019 – Jan 2022
Coverage: 60 schools in the Centre (40) and Littoral (20) regions
Focus:
• Expanding GBV prevention to primary, secondary, and high schools
• Supporting schools to develop gender-sensitive curricula and codes of conduct
• Strengthening collaboration between schools and parents in promoting safe learning

Integrating GBV Prevention and Psychosocial Support in Education

Partner: Bread for the World (BftW)
Duration: Feb 2016 – Jan 2019
Coverage: 60 schools in the North West(20), South West(20), and Centre regions(20)
Focus:
• Embedding gender-sensitive approaches into classroom practices
• Training school counselors and teachers to provide psychosocial support
• Creating safe spaces for students to discuss issues related to GBV

Gender Awareness & the Fight Against GBV in Secondary Schools

Partner: Bread for the World (BftW)
Duration: Feb 2014 – Feb 2016
Coverage: 30 Secondary schools in the North West, South West, and Centre regions
Focus:
• Building student and teacher awareness on gender equality and GBV prevention
• Strengthening reporting systems in schools
• Promoting the role of boys and young men as allies in combating GBV

Preventing and Responding to Violence in Cameroon Schools

Partner: Evangelischer Entwicklungsdienst (EED)
Duration: 2011 – 2013
Coverage: 30 Secondary schools in the North West and South West regions
Focus:
• Introducing GBV awareness and prevention in primary and secondary schools
• Training teachers and administrators to recognize and respond to violence

Through these initiatives, GeED has become a leading force in Cameroon’s education sector, promoting gender equality, student well-being, and safe learning environments. Our combined efforts with schools, communities, and partners continue to shape a generation of young people who are aware, empowered, and resilient.
